About Pap Smear Tests

A Pap smear (or Pap test) is a simple screening procedure that checks for abnormal cervical cells that may indicate:

  • Precancerous conditions
  • Cervical cancer
  • HPV (human papillomavirus) infection

At Wellness Medical Centre, we provide compassionate, professional Pap smear tests in a comfortable, private environment. Our female healthcare providers understand the sensitivity of this examination and ensure you feel at ease throughout the process.

Why Regular Pap Smears Matter

Protecting your health through preventive care

Early Detection

Identifies cell changes before they become cancerous, allowing for early intervention.

Prevent Cervical Cancer

Regular screening reduces cervical cancer mortality by up to 80%.

Peace of Mind

Quick, simple test provides reassurance about your reproductive health.

Recommended Screening Schedule: Women should begin Pap smears at age 21 and continue every 3 years (or as recommended by your healthcare provider).

What to Expect During Your Pap Smear

A quick, 10-minute procedure that could save your life

1

Preparation

You'll be asked to undress from the waist down and given a drape for privacy. The doctor will explain each step before proceeding.

2

Examination

You'll lie on an exam table with your feet in stirrups. A speculum is gently inserted to visualize the cervix.

3

Sample Collection

Using a soft brush, the doctor collects cells from your cervix. This takes about 30 seconds and may cause mild discomfort.

4

Completion

The sample is sent to a lab for analysis. You can dress and resume normal activities immediately.

Before Your Test

  • Avoid intercourse for 24-48 hours
  • Don't use vaginal creams or medications
  • Schedule when not menstruating
  • Empty your bladder before the exam

After Your Test

  • Results typically in 1-2 weeks
  • Mild spotting may occur
  • No special aftercare needed
  • We'll contact you with results

Pap Smear FAQs

Common questions about cervical cancer screening

Does a Pap smear hurt?

Most women experience only mild discomfort during a Pap smear, similar to menstrual cramps. The speculum may feel cold or cause pressure, but the cell collection itself is quick. Our providers use the smallest appropriate speculum and will work to make you as comfortable as possible.

How often should I get a Pap smear?

Current guidelines recommend:

  • Ages 21-29: Every 3 years
  • Ages 30-65: Every 3 years (Pap alone) or every 5 years (Pap + HPV test)
  • Over 65: May stop if previous tests were normal

Your provider may recommend more frequent screening based on your health history.

What if my results are abnormal?

An abnormal result doesn't mean you have cancer. Many abnormalities resolve on their own. Depending on the result, we may recommend:

  • Repeat testing in 6-12 months
  • HPV testing
  • Colposcopy (magnified examination of the cervix)
  • Biopsy if needed

We'll guide you through next steps with compassion and clarity.
